Understanding Neuroblastoma: A Guide for Families

What is Neuroblastoma?

Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that develops from immature nerve cells, often in the adrenal glands located above the kidneys. It can also originate in the neck, chest, abdomen, or pelvis. This cancer primarily affects children under the age of five and is the most common solid tumor outside the brain in this age group. About 650 cases are diagnosed annually in the U.S., with a slightly higher prevalence in boys than girls.

The condition is often present at birth but may not be detected until the tumor grows large enough to cause symptoms. Neuroblastoma can spread quickly to other parts of the body, including lymph nodes, liver, bones, and bone marrow. Genetic mutations, particularly involving chromosome 1 and the MYCN oncogene, are common causes.

Recognizing Early Signs of Neuroblastoma

Symptoms of neuroblastoma vary depending on the tumor’s location and whether it has spread. Early signs can be subtle and easily mistaken for other conditions. Common symptoms include:

  • Abdominal swelling or a lump
  • Bone pain or limping (if cancer has spread to bones)
  • Dark circles around the eyes or bulging eyes
  • Fever, weight loss, or fatigue
  • High blood pressure or diarrhea (due to hormone secretion by the tumor).

In some cases, neuroblastoma can compress surrounding tissues, leading to breathing difficulties or nerve-related issues like drooping eyelids or weakness. If these symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice promptly is crucial. Early detection is critical. Persistent or unusual symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.
